Campus Development

1.  XJTLU Campus Development

Xi’an Jiaotong–Liverpool University (XJTLU) is located in the Dushu Lake High Education Town, which forms part of the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). The campus consists of two areas: the common space, and the exclusive XJTLU campus. The common space, shared by all the universities in the HET, contains facilities including libraries, entertainment venues, a sports centre, and accommodation. The exclusive XJTLU campus is dedicated to learning, teaching and research.

The exclusive XJTLU campus (hereinafter referred to as XJTLU Campus) covers an area approximately 407,000 m². There are three main sections; the North Campus (160,000 m²), South Campus 1 (153,000 m²), and South Campus 2 (94,000 m²). The Administration Centre of XJTLU will be situated in the North Campus.

In accordance with the 5-year development plan of the University, XJTLU Campus will be developed in two principal phases. The first phase of the ‘5-Year Plan for Campus Development’ focuses on the development of the North Campus, which is due to be completed by 2013. The second phase of the 5-Year Plan focuses on the South Campus, where building is due to commence in 2013 and be completed by 2018.

The North Campus will hold a total of five buildings, accommodating three faculties.

 Building 1, completed and put into operation in September 2006, serves for Year 1 teaching. It covers a total area of 32,000 m².

Building 2, which is currently under construction, will be used for the School of Sciences after it is completed at the end of 2009.

Upon completion it will cover an area of 45,100 m².

Building 3 is scheduled to begin construction in June 2009, and be completed and operational before September 2010.

Designated to serve as the Administration and Information Centre, it will cover an area of 54,000 m². Building 4 will be used for the School of Engineering and the School of Business, Economics and Management. The design has been confirmed, and construction is due to commence in 2009 and be completed before September 2011.

The South Campus will accommodate buildings for the School of Humanities & Arts, the School of Medical Sciences, the Sino-British University Science Park, the International Academic Exchange Centre, and the Overseas Student Exchange Centre. The South Campus will be fully developed during the second 5-Year Plan for Campus Development (2013-2018).

2.  Vision of XJTLU Campus Development

In accordance with XJTLU’s vision to become a research-led, international University, it is necessary to develop distinctive and stimulating surroundings for learning, teaching and research purposes.

Therefore the buildings and overall environment of the campus will have following features:

  • An attractive design
  • A hub of student activity
  • Elegant and peaceful retreats
  • Distinctive buildings that fuse and reflect their cultural implications
  • Easily recognisable buildings (terra cotta is the dominant colour theme)
  • Harmonious coexistence of buildings, environment and occupants
