This is a new department in a recently established university that aims to achieve an international reputation with its innovative teaching, quality research outputs and a diverse staff and student population. The department was formed in 2007 and has been growing at a swift pace, with the aim of evolving into a school of over 50 staff members by 2011. The most important activity of the permanent staff, who at present has several contributions to international journals, is conducting research and teaching in the areas of Business, Economics and Management while pursuing an exigent research publication profile. For example, there will be a department research seminar series commencing in March 2009.
The department of BEM hosts the Key Lab for Supply Chain Technology, which was approved by the Suzhou Science and Technology Bureau in 2008. The Lab looks at developing and managing supply chain technology that will be beneficial to partner organisations in terms of their resource saving through improved efficiency and effectiveness of working processes and use of technology. Benefiting from the support of XJTU and UoL, the Lab includes 10 associate members from the Agility Centre of UoL and more from the Management School of XJTU. The Academic Committee also includes 10 full professors from Europe and North America.
XJTLU is currently running University of Liverpool undergraduate programmes, delivering UoL degrees, and supporting PhD research. However, it is the intention of XJTLU to have its own awarding powers and to facilitate this the university has applied to the relevant Chinese authorities.. The first graduation will be in the 2009-2010 academic year.
The Department of BEM currently hosts the BSc in Information Management and Information System, while also delivering approximately 50% of the BSc Financial Mathematic programme (the most popular programme at XJTLU). In addition, the Department BEM will be hosting 3 new programmes from 2009: BA in Accounting, BA in Marketing and BSc in Economics.
To demonstrate its commitment to quality in the delivery of the aforementioned programmes and in conducting research, the Department of BEM aspires to be accredited by AACSB, EQUIS and EMBA within the next 10 years.
