Department of Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences currently offers a degree programme in Biological Science with four specialisations: Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology and Molecular Biology.
This degree programme is open to science applicants who have taken Biology and Chemistry subjects in China’s University Entrance Exam.
Biological Science at XJTLU is based on the University of Liverpool’s own programme, but also draws on the experience of Xi’an Jiaotong University in operating similar degree programmes. Biomedical Sciences as a degree programme has been offered at the University of Liverpool since its early days as a university, and its graduates have impressive employability rates after graduation. With the rapid development of China’s biomedical industry in the Yangtze River Delta region, the demand for university graduates with biomedical knowledge and a good command of English is on the increase.
The aim of Biological Science as a degree programme is to train highly professional and inter-disciplinary talent with expertise in Bioscience, and produce graduates who have a range of skills including a good command of English, a high level of creativity and management abilities.
Core modules of this degree programme include Cellular Structure and Function, Genetics and Evolution, Genetics of Higher Organisms, Molecular Biology Technologies, Microbes and the Environment, Brief Introduction to Pharmacology, Introductory Immunology, Human and Animal Biochemistry, Microbial Physiology, Pharmacology Principles, Genes and Development, Evolution and Ecological Genetics, Biochemistry of Disease, and Immunity System of Health and Disease. (Only some of the modules are listed and may be subject to change).
Biological Science is a leading subject which has come to the forefront in recent years as a result of social and technological developments. There are good and wide ranging employment prospects for students in this area. Graduates of this programme will be able to undertake research, development and management in high-tech enterprises in a range of different fields, including medicine and foodstuffs, and teaching and research in research and educational institutions.
