Department of Civic Design
The Department of Civic Design is a new department established at XJTLU to provide quality professional planning education and researches to accommodate the demands of rapidly developing economy and urbanization of China. The department currently offers undergraduate degree programme in Civic Design, and has already attracted a healthy number of academically talented undergraduate students. The Department of Civic Design together with the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Architecture will form the School of the Built Environment.
The Department aims:
i. To be recognized nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence in teaching, learning and research to planning and the environment;
ii. To offer up-to-date undergraduate programmes which integrate planning and other environmental subjects;
iii. To provide a supportive learning environment which will enable students to develop a sound body of knowledge, professional competence and transferrable skills for future employment and/or further study;
iv. To establish positive and constructive links with appropriate organizations, government and companies at local, national and international level, and play an active role in contributing to, and supporting sustainable developments.
The department currently offers undergraduate programme in Civic Design. The programme is based on the equivalent programme offered at the University of Liverpool. It has been designed with the broad aim of providing students with an understanding of the changing features of modern society, and the need to reconcile economic growth and development with the needs of protecting and conserving the environment. Students can choose to specialise in one of the two streams in this programme: urban design and environmental planning.
The curriculum introduces students to the theories of planning, methods of analysis, effective means of communication, planning processes, and creative strategies for implementation. The main objective of the programme is to produce well-equipped graduates with an appropriate range of knowledge and more importantly practical and inter-personal skills which will enable students to embark upon a professional career in planning and related fields of practice.
