Department of Civil Engineering

The industrialisation of China is occurring at a rapid rate. To accommodate this unprecedented process, China is building massive new infrastructures, industrial and residential properties each year. At the same time, the natural environment is seriously polluted and the energy demand has also increased sharply.  This growth has to be delivered by suitably qualified graduates who understand the multi-interdisciplinary issues concerned and are able to apply their academic knowledge to providing more environment friendly and energy saving infrastructures and properties. The Civil Engineering programme aims to deliver those graduates.

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the newer departments on the Suzhou campus and has already attracted a healthy number of academically talented undergraduate students. The Department of Civil Engineering together with the Department of Civic Design and the Department of Architecture form the School of the Built Environment.

Civil Engineering in China
XJTLU is currently running the University of Liverpool Civil Engineering undergraduate programme, delivering UoL BEng degrees, and supporting PhD research. However, it is the intention of XJTLU to have its own degree awarding powers and Chinese professional accreditation for Civil Engineering. The first cohort of undergraduates began in the academic year 2009-10. The first BEng graduation will be in the academic year 2012-2013.
One of the defining strengths of the Civil Engineering course at Liverpool University and XJTLU is the incorporation of active learning into the delivered programs. Undergraduates will learn through active participation in a range of modules and subjects. Principles of structural design will be learned through engaging in teamwork model bridge building and testing. Modern construction practices will be learned through the Constructionarium module, in which students form a mini-company and participate in a real-life construction learning initiative.

Some of the Civil Engineering students will transfer their studies to the UK in the 3rd and 4th years and complete their degree at the University of Liverpool. Others will continue and study the same high-quality course material on the Suzhou campus. Both groups of students will receive a prestigious BEng degree in Civil Engineering with the support and quality academic input from the partnering universities of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiatong.
To demonstrate its commitment to quality and professionalism in the delivery of the Civil Engineering programme and in conducting research, the School of the Built Environment aspires to be accredited by the Chinese National Board of Civil Engineering Accreditation (NBCEA), authorised by the Ministry of Construction.
