Department of Languages and Culture
The Department of Languages and Culture offers two undergraduate degree programmes: English and Finance; English and International Business. Both are open to arts applicants.
These programmes, in contrast to the English programmes offered in Chinese universities, reflect a unique inter-disciplinary feature. The programmes have been designed and developed by combining the subjects of English language and the subjects of finance and international business. In the programme structures, 50% modules are concerned with English language and another 50% are specialized modules in finance and international business. The English language modules consist of three subjects of study: English language studies, English language skills, and English cultural studies.
The Department of Languages and Culture is committed to excellence in teaching and research of English language, especially in the areas of business English. The delivery of the programmes adopts the teaching and learning strategies of the University of Liverpool and focuses on independent learning under tutor’s guidance. In addition, English as the medium of instruction and the British teaching style create a learning environment that enables the students to adapt to western education cultures and become a lifelong learner. The programmes also lay emphasis on developing students' knowledge of natural science. In Year 1, modules such as mathematics and IT are offered to strengthen the students’ mathematical and physical basis.
Upon completion of these programmes, successful graduates will have an excellent command of English and a critical awareness of the use of language in business and finance contexts. They will also be equipped with sound knowledge of finance, international business and economics, as well as cross-cultural communication knowledge and skills.
The programmes are directed at all career opportunities within the general domains of English, finance, and international business where inter-disciplinary professionals with a higher level of English and good knowledge of finance and international business are sought after. Graduates of these degree programmes will be able to pursue careers in translation and interpretation, business and administration in multinational companies, trading companies, foreign-funded enterprises and financial institutions, or work in journalism, broadcasting, advertising, and education where a higher level of English skills and knowledge is essential.
