All students study English modules delivered by the ELC for the first two years of their degree programme. These English modules are quite different from Chinese universities where students follow a national curriculum. Here at XJTLU, the aim is to ensure students develop the study skills language proficiency they need to complete a British degree programme. As such, the specially designed modules focus on English for Academic Purposes (EAP).
Tutors in the English Language Centre bring a wide variety of experience and language teaching expertise to the classroom at XJTLU. The teaching teams work together to apply and enhance English for Academic Purposes techniques for this very special context. In 2008-2009, there were over 34 staff in the ELC, the vast majority of which were native speakers of English. Chinese academic staff returning from countries such as the UK with Masters or PhD’s in Language also provide vital input into the blending of Western and Chinese teaching methodologies and shaping the direction of teaching provision in the ELC.
The ELC in Suzhou operates autonomously, with its team members using innovation and needs-related approaches to create and adapt EAP materials and projects which are relevant to the specific academic context. Since the English modules students study are part of the programmes which have been validated and accredited by the University of Liverpool, the ELC in Suzhou is well supported by the University of Liverpool when modules are improved and when new modules are developed. More information about the relationship between the University of Liverpool and XJTLU can be found on the UoL website (www.liv.ac.uk/xjtlu) by following the link on the front page.
The ELC is expanding and developing new materials all the time, and we are always interested in hearing from people who may like to become part of our team; whether to teach, undergo further professional development or for research in the areas of EAP and learner autonomy. See the Job Vacancies section of the website for details of the next round of staff recruitment.
