Biography:

Start date at XJTLU: September 2009

Although born in London, Richard was raised a northerner (and, in particular, a Lancastrian).  He developed a passion for photography which led to leaving school and studying while working.  His work in the industry covered technical-support, sales and export-oriented roles.  When this came to an end, moved to stock-control, distribution and purchasing.

Teaching followed an increasing interest in languages, initially French and German and now, of course, Chinese.  Linguistics studies gave Richard a background on how languages are learned.  His early teaching work was in London and Germany, after which he returned to the UK (Liverpool) for further teacher training and spent some time teaching in high-school.   The desire for professional development took him to study in Australia, which in turn enabled him to come and work at XJTLU.

Richard is a committed environmentalist.  Photography has provided a bridge between the often separate worlds of art and science.  He has an interest in industrial history and has put this to practical use by working on preserved railways.
