Mathematics and Physics Teaching Centre
The Mathematics and Physics Teaching Centre (MPTC) is responsible for the teaching of mathematics and physics to Year 1 students at XJTLU. Mathematics and physics are delivered in line with XJTLU’s vision to become a talent-oriented university, with reference to the basic requirements of mathematics and physics teaching at key universities such as Xi’an Jiaotong University and by combining the syllabus of corresponding modules at the University of Liverpool. MPTC has retained and strengthened the teaching of mathematics, physics and other science subjects that characterise Chinese higher education, preserved the excellence of UK university traditions, and emphasised the development of students’ problem-solving abilities, independence and creativity. The best features of mathematics teaching in well-known Chinese and foreign universities are combined to create a teaching system of these subjects that matches the University’s aims in relation to undergraduate education. Through such teaching systems, students are guaranteed to reach the same level in these fundamental courses as those students from key universities in China, and successfully upgrade to Year 2 for further study. MPTC undertakes strict supervision and administration measures to ensure the quality of its teaching. Curriculum requirements and exams are accredited by experts from well-known Chinese universities and the University of Liverpool.
MPTC uses a student-centred teaching idea, making full use of the modern teaching facilities available in XJTLU. All lecture notes, guidance materials, solutions to exercises and problems are put onto the website for students to consult and download. Special lectures on mathematics are regularly held, giving students the opportunity to extend their field of vision. Purpose-designed teaching models are used for students with different needs and requirements. Those students with difficulties in mathematics and physics are individually tutored through the personal tutorial system. Furthermore, a variety of channels exist to increase student’s interest in mathematics and physics, including student societies such as the Mathematics club. Students who excel in the subjects may also be given special guidance tailored to their needs.
MPTC is devoted to forming a highly professional team of teaching staff. All the seven lecturing tutors currently teaching in MPTC are senior professors with abundant teaching experience. They have published dozens of teaching materials, and won a number of national, provincial and ministerial awards for their teaching achievements and textbooks. Some are entitled to the Government Special Allowance. The large number of renowned mathematics and physics professors is a strong guarantee of the teaching quality of these subjects.
