Design Research Centre

Research areas

The Design Research Centre, established in 2016 from the pre-existing Design Research Institute (founded in 2013), carries out specific Research by Design activity. It conducts applied and theoretical design research with an emphasis on advanced speculative and real-world practices in the context of Chinese urbanisation.

The central mission of the Design Research Centre is to engage in context-aware and rigorous pilot projects in order to explore and demonstrate material, cultural, spatial, infrastructural, and programmatic alternatives to prevalent planning and design practices, industrial modes of operation, and economic priorities. Pilot projects are seen as fertile and strategic ground for fostering key collaborations with governmental or private entities, proposing both theoretical and implementable applied research solutions closely linked to current or future urban trends and planning goals at various urban scales.
