Innovating the education model, establishing an international university

Dear staff,

Here comes the 25th Teachers’ Day, celebrated ever since China decided that each 10th of September would be known as Teachers’ Day in 1985. This year is also the 4th year of XJTLU since its foundation in 2006. Just before the start of the festival and at a time of critical development for XJTLU, I, on behalf of the University, extend the warmest of greetings to all staff. It is you, with all your wisdom and creative work that will make this new international university stand out in China. In the short space of just three years, XJTLU has been highly recognized by students, parents and the public. Not only do more and more students choose XJTLU, but its global brand and reputation is rising day by day. More importantly, this gives all the people who are concerned with XJTLU’s development high hopes, confidence and the desire that XJTLU’s future will be brighter and it will exert positive influence on higher education in China and the world. Thanks to all staff for your hard work and contribution to the university’s development!

A top university needs support from the following five aspects: dedicated teaching staff, modern infrastructure and facilities, resources, a supportive community and good campus culture. The teacher’s mission is to educate students. This is expressed by a Chinese saying that “it takes a teacher to transmit wisdom, impart knowledge, and resolve doubts”. In the modern world, with rapid economic growth and social development, society’s requirements for education and cultivating talent is increasing more and more. Especially as the result of internationalization and higher education reforms, XJTLU shoulders the responsibility of exploring university reforms and education model innovation. In 2008, we have identified the vision and mission of XJTLU, made strategic development plans, adjusted organization and service structure, clarified HeXie management philosophy and MBAR2 techniques and endeavored to create teamwork spirit and an innovative culture through case study meetings, etc.

In the new academic year, the university will commit itself to completing and implementing the Learning & Teaching Strategy, exploring the innovative education model and process to improve education quality. Therefore, we hope all staff and students will participate in a deeper exploration of the theory and practice which absorbs the advantages of the western education model as well as keeping the essence of the eastern model to form XJTLU’s unique paradigm. It will integrate sino-foreign higher education and meet the requirements of modern development to educate more leading professionals in technology and management!

Apart from exploring new education models and new methods, shifting students from passive learners to active learners, guiding students to have life-long learning abilities, helping students to grow healthily with their tutors’ instructions, we also hope teachers will participate in research work actively to gain more creative research findings. We hope that teachers will connect their own jobs with the vision of becoming “research-led” to help XJTLU become an international university in China and a Chinese university recognized internationally for its unique features in learning & teaching, research, social service and education management, thus enabling XJTLU to make our own contribution to the higher education of China and even the world.

Finally, I wish everyone a very happy Teachers’ Day! In the new academic year, I wish all teachers to be successful, all staff to work happily, all students to progress in studies and all friends who are concerned about XJTLU’s development to live happily! We wish XJTLU will grow faster and develop better to become a more famous brand and make a bigger contribution to the public! We wish XJTLU to be more renowned by all sectors of society!

Professor Youmin Xi, Executive President of XJTLU
