China Telecom plugs into XJTLU
(XJTLU, China – 13th June, 2009) The Suzhou branch of China Telecom has joined forces with Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), cementing their cooperation at the official signing ceremony for a new scholarships scheme.
The China Telecom Scholarships will be available to all students attending XJTLU, with a maximum RMB320,000 available over a two year period. The candidates will be nominated by the University.
China Telecom regards XJTLU as a base for teaching and research excellence, and is keen to form an alliance and to recruit high caliber graduates. They will also offer work placements for undergraduates.
Professor Minzhu Yang, Vice-President of XJTLU, said; “Communication engineering is a traditional and strong discipline in both Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool. This means that XJTLU is able to integrate the research strengths and resources of the two parent universities to reach a new height … We are delighted to have formed a partnership with China Telecom.”
Student accommodation will be fitted with landline and wireless broadband connection, and the students will be able to enjoy free access to the XJTLU website. China Telecom has also pledged to give every student and staff member a free 3G phone number and mobile phone.
China Telecom is the nation’s largest telecommunications provider, supplying phone lines to 208m customers, broadband to 44m, and mobile services for 28m, and recording annual profits running into the tens of billions. It received the ‘Best Managed Company – China 2008’ award from FinanceAsia, and "The CAPITAL Outstanding China Enterprise Awards - Telecommunications" award for three consecutive years.
The ceremony was attended by Dr. Baocheng Li, Director of Development & External Affairs Centre, and Mr. Shaofeng Zhang, Director of Student Admission & Career Office. From China Telecom, Mrs. Xiaqing Tian, General Director, Mr. Hua Xu, Deputy General Director, Mr. Yadong Shi, Deputy General Director, and Mr. Yi Zhang, General Director of Sub-branch. Also present was Mr. Jun Li, Director of Information Centre for SIPEDI.
