Delegation from Queen Mary, University of London Visits XJTLU

(XJTLU, China – 13th January, 2009) A delegation from Queen Mary, University of London visited Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University to exchange views on issues related to Sino-Foreign cooperative universities.

Professor Smith, Vice President, described the infrastructure and campus layout, and went on to detail the facilities across the SIP Higher Education Zone, plus the development history, vision admission, faculty set-up, campus layout, learning and teaching model, and scientific research themes.

During the meeting, the delegates discussed issues concerning student recruitment, degree awarding powers, the “2+2” program, scholarship system, credit exchange system and overseas students recruitment.

When it came to taking English as the medium of instruction, Professor Smith compared XJTLU with the CET (College English Test), which is prevalent in China but not well recognised abroad due to its overstress on examination, and indicated the importance of students’ acquisition of learning skills and English proficiency consistent with the degree-awarding standards of UK universities.

University of London is one of the most prestigious universities in the UK and Queen Mary College joined the University of London in 1915. It has over 90,000 students, among whom 1,600 are overseas.

The delegation also took a tour of the library, classrooms and other teaching facilities.
