MIT Visits XJTLU

(XJTLU, China – 19th January, 2010) A delegation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) visited Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

 

Headed by Adele Santos, Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, the delegation were introduced to the concept of a collaborative institution, backed by two distinguished parent universities and supported by Chinese, British and Singaporean governments.

 

Professor Yang, Vice President, greeted the guests before delivering a presentation. He said; “XJTLU has a student centered education model and fine quality teaching staff from all over the world. We are striving to become a research-led University, and an internationally recognised University.”

In response to questions Professor Yang and Dr. Li, Special Project Officer and Coordinator, detailed the mutual benefits gained between the Universities involved in the collaboration, focusing on research links and international influence. Talks also covered student internship schemes the University has created with local businesses.

 

Regarding the primary medium of tuition, Yang added; “All the courses are taught in English from the second year on. In the first year students receive English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English Fluency (EF) tuition.”

 

MIT was positioned 9th in the 2009 Times Higher Education World University Ranking, and has a number of prominent alumni, including Nobel winners Robert Engle and Kofi Annan. Focusing on but not limited to science and technology programmes, the University has over 10,000 students supported by over 1,500 faculty staff. MIT has formed educational alliances with Cambridge, Harvard, and with universities in Singapore.
