Tutor forum held at XJTLU
(XJTLU, China – 16th January, 2010) The 2nd Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Tutor Forum was held for over 70 recognised tutor’s, constituted by experts from corporate management, government organisationss and higher learning institutions, who gathered to exchange experience and ideas pertaining to student support and implementation of off-campus tutorial system.
President Xi announced the appointment of new members and expressed appreciation for their attendance. He said. “Thank you all for your unpaid help and guidance to the students of XJTLU for so long and your contributions to XJTLU and the whole society at large.”
Further elaborating on the unique educational model and off-campus tutorial system of XJTLU in his speech, Professor Xi added; “Universities in modern times tends to become a community, where teachers, students and tutors can interact to learn, share and grow together. Our off-campus tutorial system is built to create a community to benefit the students and recognized tutors. We encourage students to take initiative to contact our off-campus tutors so as to make full use of the tutorial system. We will continue the efforts to establish a series of platforms to strengthen student-tutor and tutor-tutor interaction.”
Vice President Yang reviewed the achievements XJTLU has made on off-campus tutorial system in the past year. Since its initiation in March 2009, the system has gained extensive support and positive response from alumni of Xi’an Jiaotong University, student parents and authorities from all social strata.
The number of recognised tutors continues to grow, increasing from 30 to 99. The student size has expanded to 480, covering all on-campus 3rd and 4th year students of XJTLU. The tutor and student databases have been formalised and are being improved.
The tutor committee has been set up and put into operation; two-way options have been realised for both students and tutors, and off-campus tutorial system is implemented in forms of lecturing, discussion and symposium, with each mutually complementary to another. Students have been provided with effective guidance over their career establishment, entrepreneurship and social practice in the course of the implementation of the off-campus tutorial system.
In 2010, XJTLU will continue to perfect off-campus tutorial platform, expand the tutor size and strengthen the relevant assessment. It also plans to convene the 2nd tutor and students meeting to step up off-campus tutorial system of XJTLU.
