1. Oligothiophene molecular wires on graphene-based molecular junctions

Tingwei Gao

In the recent years, with the miniaturization of electronic devices, the traditional silicon-based semiconductors have found their limitations. It was proposed that molecular electronics could be a promising solution. With the help of scanning tunnelling microscope, it is possible to construct and characterize molecular junction, an elementary unit of molecular devices. This talk will review basic concepts of molecular devices, methods for measuring the conductance of molecular junctions and the factors affecting the charge transport. My research plans for the project will also be presented.

2. Novel non-aqueous electrolytes for Lithium-ion and post Lithium-ion battery technologies

Ying Zhang

Due to the environmental issues such as CO2 emission caused by the use of fossil fuels, there is a need of extending the application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for automotive and stationary storage. However, the LIB technology is facing problems due to limited resources, high cost and some safety risks. In pursuit of finding other suitable energy sources to overcome the disadvantages of lithium secondary batteries, researches on alternative systems based on metals that are earth-abundant, low-cost and high-performance have made tremendous progress. My research project will focus on comparing fundamental properties of K-ion, Li-ion and K/Li dual ion cells, in order to find out a promising storage source for emerging applications.

3. Introduction & applications of semiconducting nano-potassium hexaniobate (K4Nb6O17)

Shiqi Zhao

Inorganic semiconducting potassium hexaniobate has been widely studied as a photocatalyst. By using metal loads, ions doping and some other methods, its photocatalytic activity can be improved, but some metals (like Pt) are very expensive, which make it difficult to be all-pervading. In this presentation, some principle and mechanism using potassium hexaniobate and modified potassium hexaniobate in water-splitting reactions and their syntheses will be discussed.

4. Graphene Based fabricated textile for wearable sensor

Mingde Zhu

This presentation is going to review the application of wearable sensors, which can improve the life quality of people. The replacement of conventional sensing material by graphene and its benefit, the methods of making graphene as well as fabrication of graphene-based textile will be discussed. In the end, a research plan about the graphene-based glove motion sensor will be presented.
