Profile

Boris Tefsen was born in the Netherlands and obtained a M.Sc. in Medical Biology from the University of Amsterdam (1994-1999). He did his PhD studies in the laboratory of Jan Tommassen, at the Molecular Microbiology Department of Utrecht University (2000-2004). He studied the transport of lipopolysaccharide inside Escherichia coli and Neisseria meningitidis under the stimulating supervision of Hans de Cock. Thereafter, he went back to Amsterdam to become a postdoc (2004-2012), at the VU University Medical Center at the Department of Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology. In the lab of Irma van Die, he conducted research on several glycoimmunology projects, including the development of a glycan-subunit vaccine against the sheep parasite Haemonchus contortus and studies on the biogenesis of galactofuranose in Aspergillus niger. The next, life-changing, step was his move to Beijing, China, to work in the structural virology lab of George F. Gao on structure and function of influenza proteins (2012-2014). In August 2014, he was appointed as associate professor at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, where he has started his own group that focuses on better understanding the biogenesis of the Mycobacterial cell envelope, with an emphasis on lipid and carbohydrate pathways. The main driver behind his research has always been curiosity about the complexity of life around us and the urge to understand how basic molecular interactions make nature function like it does.
