Research-led Teaching Training Programme II



There has been much criticism of the traditional classroom teaching model in China, which typically focuses on knowledge transmission. Many universities realise that it is important to transform their teaching from a teacher-centred, passive learning model to a more student-centred, active learning model in which the ultimate objective is to not only equip students with knowledge and skills to pass exams or find jobs, but to also develop their critical thinking and problem solving abilities to help them navigate an uncertain and complex society.

Research-led learning and teaching is considered an effective way to help cultivate students’ critical thinking through changing students’ learning processes. However, there are many different ways of conceptualising what research-led learning and teaching is as well as various methods to implement it in different disciplines.

Therefore, it is necessary to review the different definitions, investigate strategies for implementing this teaching method, and explore the success and constraints across diverse circumstances such as different disciplines, students’ backgrounds, and classroom sizes, as well as further explore the possibility of summarising a common practice that can be promoted within XJTLU.


Organised by the Institute of Leadership and Education Advanced Development at XJTLU, the Research-led Teaching Training Programme will share and promote the research-led model based on the teaching that takes place at XTJLU, which integrates educational ideas from east and west. The event aims to help participants apply a research-led approach to their practice, ultimately improving education quality and contributing to higher education reform in China.

It is aimed at university teaching staff and administrators who are devoted to teaching innovation and who are actively exploring ‘student-centred’ teaching. The target scale is 40 people.

By the end of the training participants will have gained:

  • understanding of research-led learning and teaching and its value
  • knowledge on methodologies and strategies of research-led learning and teaching curriculum design
  • advice on practical implementation in learning and teaching innovation.


Workshops will be delivered mainly through keynote speeches, case studies, and active learning that aims to solve challenges and difficulties through practical situations.

Lunch, dinner and tea break will be served. Transportation and accommodation are not covered, although accommodation booking is provided for the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool International Conference Cente (RMB 350 per room per night).
