Workshop: Knowledge Integration in Energy Retrofit*

Energy retrofit of existing buildings is complex. This complexity mainly emanates from the need to integrate disciplinary knowledge and expertise, both technological and managerial, in an interdisciplinary context to find buildable solutions that improve actual energy performance. However, training and education in professional silos, and the resultant fragmentation of the industry, is a significant barrier to integration.

This workshop aims at testing an educational tool helping higher education students and practitioners in developing a holistic approach to the energy retrofit of buildings and cities. This tool is a “concept map”: a diagram depicting concepts and their mutual relationships. A concept map makes use of simple graphic elements such as boxes or circles representing ideas and information, and labelled arrows representing relationships and their significance.

It is a tool used in different fields of research and practice to help students transfer complex cognitive processes into readable and interactive graphic outputs.

The objectives of these workshops are:

  • To improve cognitive skills to manage complex projects.
  • To develop the ability to integrate the participant’s prior knowledge with new piece of information.
  • To enhance the aptitude to work collaboratively

Two separate sessions will be scheduled for students and academics.

Dr MAURIZIO SIBILLA

Marie-Sklodowska Curie Fellow and Senior Researcher Fellow at the School of the Built Environment, Oxford Brookes University, UK. From 2012 to 2017 he was postdoctoral researcher at the Sapienza University of Rome. His work experience over the past years has focused on the construction of a bridge between technology and the design culture, focusing his interest in the area of environmental technologies where he has carried out relevant academic and professional activities.

Dr ESRA KURUL

Reader at the School of the Built Environment, Oxford Brookes University, UK. Esra’s research is inter-disciplinary and wherever appropriate it is undertaken in collaboration with the industry. Her current research interests include inter-disciplinary collaboration to achieve sustainability in the built environment, adaptation of businesses to Climate Change, and the relationship between social capital and the effective management of knowledge.

Workshop: BIM Across Boundaries

Speaker in international congresses (World Design Summit, Design Principles & Practices) he is professor of parametric design and digital fabrication in undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Specialist in 3D Modeling, Digital Design and Digital Fabrication he has worked with several companies as process and product innovation specialist together with Confindustria (General Confederation of Italian Industry).

In Mexico he founded Studio Giancarlo Di Marco, consulting, training and design services for Architecture, Engineering and Industrial/Product Design.

He is an Autodesk and McNeel certified trainer, author of the book Simplified Complexity – Method for advanced NURBS modeling with Rhinoceros, available in three languages (ita, eng, esp).

Workshop: Digital Fabrication Across Boundaries

This workshop aims to involve both digital design and fabrication strategies, in order to first simulate and then fabricate a small architectural proposition based on the reciprocal frames’ structures principle. The session will be divided in 2 days, where each day is strategically thought with the interest of first convey form finding tools running on the visual scripting platform Grasshopper for Rhinoceros using “Kangaroo” plugin to generate the outer shell and reproduce the structural elements layout on it. Subsequently, the elements will be structurally analysed using a parametric structural engineering plugin called “Karamba” that will allow an extra evaluation on the digital model. Finally, the elements will be CNC milled out of several plywood planks, using digital fabrication facilities and assembled as one single structure in one of the University spaces.

ENRICO PONTELLO

From the earliest age, I have been fond of drawing, model making and computer graphics, which naturally and spontaneously led me to approach the world of architecture.

I am Enrico, an early graduate MAA Architect from a department called CITAstudio at the KADK in Copenhagen, focused on Computation in Architecture. I am glad that I took the chance to be part of it, considering the relation of mutual respect and admiration with professors which guaranteed a suitable environment for the interchange of knowledge, with the result of a collective growth. I graduate with a Master Thesis with a strong orientation towards research and methodology development entitled “Robotically Fabricated Ice Formwork”. I prototyped using robotic fabrication, involving generative design and topology optimization techniques, to physically cast fibre reinforced concrete elements in an ice formwork.

My personal interests span from craftsmanship techniques to digital and robotic fabrication processes, I previously worked in an architecture company as a model maker and that allowed me to explore in a different way an incredible and effective tool to represent a project. I also very much sketching that sometimes led to a bit more clear and solid ideas through digital modelling and scripting.
