Dear Reader,
We may not know where you are in the world or how you discovered this magazine. However, there is one thing we know for sure: You are curious.
Light & Wings digital magazine is designed to fuel your desire for knowledge and entertainment. Our content is carefully crafted to provide you with interesting information that can be enjoyed through reading, watching, or listening.
Our name, Light & Wings, is the motto of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, the magazine’s publisher. It comes from the Latin Aethera ac lucem petimus, which, to us, means learning new things to understand ourselves and the world better, and nurturing our capability to fly higher and farther.
We encourage all our students and readers to use the “Light” of learning to see the world, the future, their dreams and themselves through life. Then, by developing “Wings”, we can pursue those dreams, create value, advance our careers and change the world.
From our location in Suzhou, China, our international team of writers and editors bring you a perspective of Chinese culture and life often overlooked in international media, articles about pioneering research, and many other topics.
This first issue of Light & Wings includes a discussion on the role of ginkgo trees and Pingtan in Chinese cultural heritage and identity, how different cultures describe pain, and an exploration of Suzhou cuisine. It also features the winning photos of an international photography contest with the theme of 地方: Place and Space within China, which was judged by internationally renowned photographer Pinglang Zhou.
As a curious person – a lifelong learner – our ideas and dreams are limitless in their potential when we allow them to fly. We hope we will inspire you to do the same: use the light of learning to discover your passion, then develop your wings to create something new. Dare to dream big and let your ideas take flight! By doing so, we can open ourselves to a world of possibilities and opportunities.
