China is an ageing society with 500 million people over the age of sixty. Among this population, mental health has become a major challenge. Depression appears to be a particularly strong predictor of mortality rate among the elderly. Thus, it is necessary to understand the mental health of the elderly as it is a key to respond to their needs. This study will employ quantitative and qualitative approaches to investigate the mental health situation and existing policies so as to inform programs to prevent mental health problems among the elderly and to promote their well-being.
