Hyung-Chul Chung

Dr. Hyung-Chul Chung is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban Planning and Design, School of Design at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. He is a planning consultant and researcher. His research interests have focused on land use and transportation coordination, sustainable community, housing market and policy, and environment and public health. In particular, his research is mainly concerned with how urban dynamics affect market behaviors (e.g. price, rent, transactions, turnover, borrowing, location choice, etc.), and how the built environment is associated with human behaviors and public well-being (e.g. travel behaviors, satisfaction, physical activity, mental health, etc.). He believes that city planners need to see livability and quality of life in the built environment and concerted efforts should be made in public policy-making processes at local/regional/national levels. He is interested to employ spatial analysis, econometric models, and deep learning techniques using big data.

Currently, I am working on the following research (2022):

- The Effects of ‘Score-Based’ Enrolment Migration Education Policy on Housing Market in Suzhou, China (under review)

- Measuring mediating effects of physical activity and travel behavior: How does the perception of the built environment affect mental health during COVID19? The cases of Shanghai and Seoul (under review)
