Presentation Title: From Garden to Market: Export Shocks and Household Production
Abstract: This paper examines whether export growth changes how households allocate production between the household and the market. We combine seven rounds of the Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey from 2002 to 2014 with province-level variation in export exposure based on initial industrial specialization and subsequent national export growth. Greater export exposure increases reliance on market-purchased food, with the response concentrated among rural households. The shift toward market sourcing is accompanied by labor reallocation away from activities involving agricultural self-employment, lower household agricultural production, and reduced consumption from own production. Purchased quantity shares also rise for several non-staple foods, indicating that the response is not driven solely by price changes. We find little evidence of broad increases in measured household resources or local retail access. The findings show how export-driven labor reallocation can shift production from households toward markets, providing household-level evidence on the marketization dimension of structural transformation.
