Professor Zhiwei Shan, a doctoral supervisor, currently serves as a Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Committee and Vice President of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of Materials, Director of the Shaanxi Province Magnesium Based New Materials Engineering Research Center, Vice President of the Western Returned Scholars Association in Shannxi Province, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Materials China, Member of the Overall Expert Group of the National Key Research and Development Program of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, and Member of the Teaching Steering Committee for Materials Science and Engineering in Higher Education Institutions of China’s Ministry of Education. He has been given the title of a National-Level Leading Talent in China.

His main research areas include the microscopic origins and evolution mechanisms of deformation and damage in metallic materials, as well as the design, preparation, and application of high-quality magnesium-based new materials. To date, he has published 163 papers in journals including Science (4 papers), Nature (1 paper), and Nature Materials (7 papers), with 9,238 citations indexed in the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI). He served as a Volume Organiser (only four individuals worldwide per year. When Prof Shan served he was the sole representative from China) and Editorial Board Member of the international journal MRS Bulletin. He has been interviewed twice by Nature magazine. He has delivered over 100 plenary and invited presentations, including a one-hour plenary talk at the 19th International Microscopy Congress in Sydney in 2018 (held every four years and attended by approximately 2,800 participants that year), making him the only Chinese scholar to date to present a plenary talk at this conference series. His research achievements include two Second Prizes of the National Natural Science Award, three First Prizes of the Provincial/Ministerial-Level Natural Science Award, the Technical Invention First Prize of the Chinese Materials Research Society, the IMS Innovative Process Award and Annual Person Award, the International Magnesium Association (IMA) Best Deformed Product Award, the Special Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research of Shaanxi Higher Education Institutions, the Best Paper Award of the Light Metals Division of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) in the US, the “Top 100 Most Influential International Academic Papers of China”, and the “Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress of Chinese Higher Education Institutions”. The academic team he leads has been honoured as one of the first cohort of National “Huang Danian-style” Teacher Teams, a Shaanxi Provincial “Huang Danian-style” Teacher Team, and a National First-Class Team under the Shaanxi Sanqin Talents Special Support Program.
