School of Mathematics and Physics

About

The School of Mathematics and Physics is home to more than 100 staff members, over 2,500 undergraduate students, more than 200 master’s students and more than 60 PhD students.

The School equips students with a strong academic foundation as well as analytical skills, communication skills, programming skills, teamwork skills and practical problem-solving skills.

The academic staff are involved in cutting-edge research in different aspects of mathematics and physics, publish hundreds of research articles annually, have received governmental or collaboration projects, and train excellent research students.

Brief history

The School of Mathematics and Physics was formally established in September 2022 through the integration of five departments in the former School of Science: the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Department of Pure Mathematics, the Department of University Mathematics, the Department of Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, and the Department of Physics. These five departments were previously divisions of the former Department of Mathematical Sciences before the University’s academic restructuring. The Department of Mathematical Sciences was established in 2014 through the merger of the former Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, and was subsequently reorganized and incorporated into the School of Science following the University’s academic restructuring in 2020. In September 2026, to further optimize the disciplinary structure and integrate academic strengths, the Departments of Applied Mathematics and Pure Mathematics were merged to form the new Department of Applied Mathematics.
