Mohd Rizal Arshad is an expert in control and robotics systems, especially in the applications of marine intelligent robotics, having conducted research and development in this field for more than 25 years.
He received his BEng Medical Electronics and Instrumentation from the University of Liverpool in 1994, MSc Electronic Control Engineering from the University of Salford in 1995, and PhD in Electronic Engineering in 1999, also from Liverpool.
He was an academic staff member at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Universiti Sains Malaysia for more than 23 years, where he held various administrative posts.
He also had a short stint as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Universiti Malaysia Perlis for about two years, from 2019 until 2021.
Professor Rizal has supervised many postgraduate students and has published extensively. He is a professional engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia and a professional technologist with the Malaysian Board of Technologists.
He is also a Chartered Marine Engineer with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and registered with the UK Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer, an IEEE senior member, founding chair of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES) Malaysia, recipient of IEEE OES Presidential Award 2019, and recently appointed as an IEEE OES Distinguished Lecturer for 2024-2026.
Professor Rizal is also a steering committee member of the Asian Control Association, a member of the International Federation of Automatic Control’s Technical Committee on Marine Systems (TC 7.2) and a committee member of the Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture Technical Division of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia.
