Abstract
The oceans cover more than seventy per cent of our planet and play a vital role in climate regulation, food security, energy resources, and biodiversity. Yet, much of the ocean remains unexplored due to its harsh, complex, and inaccessible nature. This lecture will explore recent research developments in the design and deployment of novel underwater robotic platforms for ocean exploration and long-term monitoring. It will highlight how advances in underwater sensing and communication—such as imaging systems, acoustic methods, and environmental sensors—enable the measurement of key ocean parameters critical for understanding marine ecosystems and planetary sustainability. Particular attention will be given to the challenges of operating in the underwater environment, including energy efficiency, reliability, and the need for safe and minimally invasive technologies. As human activities increasingly venture into the oceans in search of resources such as energy, food, and minerals, it is essential that technological solutions are developed responsibly. The lecture will argue that underwater robotics, when designed with sustainability in mind, can support scientific discovery and resource management while minimising ecological impact and safeguarding the health of our oceans for future generations.
Speaker

Dr. Mohd Rizal Arshad is a Professor and Dean of the School of Robotics at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University with research interests in intelligent control, robotics, and marine and underwater systems. His work focuses on the design and development of autonomous and semi-autonomous underwater robotic platforms, bio-inspired sensing, and advanced methods for underwater navigation, communication, and environmental monitoring. He has been actively involved in interdisciplinary research addressing real-world challenges in ocean exploration, marine inspection, and sustainable maritime operations. Prof. Mohd Rizal Arshad has delivered invited and keynote talks at international conferences and academic forums, and collaborates with researchers and industry partners across Asia and beyond. Beyond technical innovation, his research philosophy emphasises developing safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible technology to support long-term ocean monitoring and planetary sustainability.
