November 25, 2021

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU)’s Undergraduate English for Academic Purposes Programme and Presessional English Programme delivered by the English Language Centre have both been conferred as Validated Programmes by the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL).

XJTLU has become the first and only institution in the Chinese mainland that is double-accredited by BALEAP (British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes) and the CIOL.

The CIOL, founded in 1910 in the UK, is the leading professional body for language practitioners. The CIOL Recognition, Validation and Certification(RVC) Scheme is designed to provide recognition for organisations delivering language education, evidencing professionalism and demonstrating the rigour of programmes.

About the two programmes, the CIOL commented:

“The Centre provides excellent support for students during their transitioning to study within English-medium higher education. The programmes develop English language skills as well as deliver the specific English skills required for academic success.

“There are wide-ranging university structures, policies, guidance and effective quality management in place to ensure that standards are achieved and maintained and that students are well supported through their academic journey as undergraduate or postgraduate students.”

John Worne, CIOL CEO, adds: “High quality language skills are a passport to opportunity and an asset for life; we are delighted to validate two of Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University’s English language programmes as equipping their students for academic, linguistic and professional success.”

Helen Beech, Acting Dean of XJTLU’s School of Languages, notes: “By aligning with the UK’s chartered body for linguists, the English Language Centre and all of our faculty can share in this prestigious recognition of our integrity and standards.”

Angela Xia, Director of XJTLU English Language Centre, says: “The English Language Centre strives to work with students and academics across the University to provide a solid language foundation and continuous support for students’ academic success both at and beyond XJTLU.

“The Centre will continue to achieve excellence in delivering high-quality EAP programmes and developing the XJTLU approach to EAP in our unique setting of a research-led international university in China.”
