Recently, IBSS Work placement, Employability and Career development (WEC) team successfully held Internet/ E-commerce industry sharing event as part of the "Explore the Corporate World" series. This event brought together senior professionals with rich experience in e-commerce operations, marketing, sales and internet finance, to discuss the expectations and demands for talents in the Internet/ E-commerce industry.
The event was hosted by IBSS Career Counselor Hailu Hou. The roundtable invited three excellent guest speakers, including Justin (Jijun) Miao, Senior Operation Director of ecMAX e-commerce, Linqian Li, IBSS BD Specialist (who used to work in the International Business Department of Ant Group), and Zihao Wang, IBSS MSc Finance student (currently working at DeWu/ Poison as product intern). From their professional perspectives, they analyzed the core business, skill requirements, and development trends of the Internet/ E-commerce industry, and provided valuable career advice for our students.
Justin (Jijun) Miao, Senior Operation Director of ecMAX
Justin (Jijun) Miao has rich e-commerce operation, marketing and sales experience in several Fortune Global 500 companies (such as Wyeth, Pfizer, Danone, Hormel, Johnson & Johnson, etc.). He shared the key abilities and qualities needed to enter well-known e-commerce platforms. He emphasized that with the rapid changes in the consumer goods market, students need to have a comprehensive ability in marketing, sales, and operations to adapt to the employer needs. Justin also pointed out that from offline shopping malls to Taobao, JD.com, and now TikTok live streaming, there is always a new consumer channel that becomes mainstream. He is optimistic about the future development of the e-commerce industry and encourages students to keep pace with the times, continue to learn, maintain agility, and gain knowledge through practice.
Linqian Li, IBSS staff (used to work in Ant Group)
Linqian Li used to work in Deloitte and Ant Group. She introduced the organizational structure of Ant Group and the work content of the International Business Department to the students, emphasizing the importance of "multitasking ability" in the internet industry. She also shared other core skills needed in the workplace, such as proficiency in Excel and critical thinking ability. At the same time, Linqian advised students to focus on learning professional knowledge and improving transferable skills, as the internet industry is full of challenges but also full of opportunities.
Zihao Wang, IBSS student (Product Intern at DeWu/ Poison)
Zihao Wang, our excellent MSc Finance student, is currently a product intern at DeWu/ Poison. He shared his personal experience, knowledge of e-commerce governance, and his job content, to guide students on how to improve their competitiveness in job applications, for example, employers pay much attention to the internship relevance, arrival time, and internship duration. He advised students to have a clear career plan and master hard skills in the e-commerce field, such as SQL. Zihao also encouraged students to discover their own advantages, find the field they love to maintain their passion and continuous improvement at work.
The Internet/ E-commerce industry sharing event was highly praised by the attending students. Many students said that the event not only deepened their understanding of the Internet/ E-commerce industry, but also clarified the direction in which they should strive. Hailu Hou concluded "We hope our students can find their own positioning, actively learn about relevant industry knowledge, and participate in internships in such fields. At the same time, students are more than welcome to participate in career counseling, career events, soft skills trainings, and CV clinics provided by the WEC team, to broaden their career horizons and improve their comprehensive abilities in preparation for their future careers."
