Last Wednesday, the IBSS (International Business School Suzhou at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University) Sustainable Future Talents’ student group hosted an innovative and engaging event titled "Pedal Power, Sugar Shower" as part of their “15 Ways in 15 Weeks 4.0” carbon reduction initiative. The activity creatively combined fun with sustainability by using pedal-powered bicycles connected to cotton candy machines, demonstrating the potential of clean energy in every life.
Aligned with this year’s Earth Week theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, the event highlighted the importance of green energy awareness, healthy living, and community collaboration. Over 260 students and faculty participated, marking it one of the most popular initiatives this semester. The success of the event was a testament to the growing interest in sustainable practice among the IBSS community.
"The response was overwhelming," said Jiaxin Wang, the Year 2 International Business with a Language student who led the event. "Seeing so many classmates excited about sustainability while having fun was incredibly rewarding. Our pedal-powered stations really showed how individual actions can collectively make a difference."
The activity's clever design allowed participants to generate clean energy through cycling, which was then used to power cotton candy machines. Real-time CO₂ savings displays showed attendees the tangible impact of their efforts, with an estimated 50kg of carbon emissions collectively saved during the event.
The event not only provided a delicious treat but alsosparked conversations about renewable energy and individual contributions to agreener future. The IBSS Sustainable Future Talents group hopes to inspire moresuch initiatives in the coming weeks.
