On April 23rd 2025, a creative and fragrant afternoon, the Chemistry Society held an event titled "Explore Chemical Magic, Unlock Life's Wonders" in the laboratory. Participants transformed into "life artists", personally crafting handmade soaps, perfumes, and weather bottles. Each participate has received a unique spring gift from the collision of chemistry and aesthetics.
Handmade Soap: Solidifying Nature's Gift
From the raw materials of coconut oil and sodium hydroxide to the addition of color and fragrance, everyone carefully pours the well-stirred mixture into the molds. Each soap of different colors has its own story. The moment they are demolded after cooling, every piece of soap becomes a unique work of art.
Perfume Extraction: Crafting Your Personal Fragrance
"The top note is the liveliness of citrus, followed by the gentle touch of jasmine in the middle note..." Participants use droppers to precisely blend, exploring the process of extracting the fragrant components from orange peels and jasmine flowers using organic solvents such as ethanol and petroleum ether. Within a small bottle of perfume lies each person's unique memory of scents.
Weather Bottle: Immerse Weather Phenomena in Glass
When potassium nitrate, camphor and distilled water crystallize in the bottle, it seems as if the changes of seasons from sunny to rainy and snowy are frozen. Everyone shakes the bottle to observe the changes in the crystals and is amazed by the romantic reaction of temperature and chemistry - "It turns out that science can be so beautiful!"
This activity received unanimous praise from the participants. It not only enabled them to create beauty with their hands, but also made us realize that science is never far away from our daily life. We look forward to the next Chemistry Club activity and hope to continue exploring the infinite possibilities of chemistry with you!
