The Sage Handbook of the Chinese Economy, published by the world-leading academic publisher Sage, has recently been released. The handbook's editor-in-chief is Professor Ronald M. Schramm, Adjunct Professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs—who is also the author of the core textbook for IBSS's ECO306 Chinese Economy module. The handbook boasts a prestigious lineup of contributors, including renowned scholars from Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the Director of Research at the People's Bank of China's Financial Research Institute. It has been praised by Columbia University's official website titled " A New Book on the Chinese Economy Is a Must for Asia Experts”.

Faculty Deep Engagement and Professional Contribution
Dr Haili Wu, a faculty member in our Department of Economics and Module Leader for ECO306 Chinese Economy, independently authored a chapter titled "Capital Budgeting and the Cost of Capital in China." The chapter systematically elucidates the practices of capital budgeting and the logic of capital cost within the context of China's distinctive capital market environment, integrating theoretical and practical perspectives. Her in-depth involvement highlights the solid research expertise and international academic influence of IBSS faculty in this specialized field.

Course Earns High Student Praise
Dr Haili Wu integrates her cutting-edge research findings and practical insights into her teaching. The ECO306 Chinese Economy module she leads is highly popular among students for its clear real-world orientation and strong theoretical foundation.
- Yangxu Lin, a graduate of the Class of 2021 and currently a researcher at the University of Oxford, stated: "This course successfully bridges economic theory and business reality, allowing me to discern economic logic through industry practice—it has been immensely beneficial. This understanding of the Chinese economy has also provided me with a unique perspective and a solid foundation for my subsequent academic research and discourse overseas."
- Miller Runquist, an exchange student from University of Calgary, Canada, Class of 2026, remarked: "This Chinese Economy course is truly fascinating. After taking it, I’ve probably become the person in my city who understands China’s economy the best."
Dr Haili Wu's contribution to this international authoritative handbook is another example of IBSS's commitment to synergistic "research-teaching" development. It not only demonstrates that the exceptional research capabilities of our faculty are recognised by the international academic community but also ensures that our curriculum content continuously tracks and integrates global academic frontiers, providing students with a high-quality education that is both grounded in Chinese practice and possesses an international vision.
