Dr Qingtao Chen receives multiple international recognitions for research contributions

The Department of Applied Mathematics is pleased to announce and congratulate Dr Qingtao Chen on several significant recognitions of his research contributions in geometric analysis and low-dimensional topology.

First, the Chen–Yang Volume Conjecture, proposed by Dr Chen and his collaborator Dr Tian Yang, has been selected as the theme topic of BTW6: The Volume Conjecture: From Some TQFTs to Recent Developments. BTW6 is the sixth annual workshop of Topology between the Waves, an international workshop series held annually in France. The selection of the conjecture as the central theme of the workshop reflects the growing interest and importance of this work in the field. The conjecture was proposed in their paper “Volume conjectures for the Reshetikhin-Turaev and the Turaev-Viro invariants” (Quantum Topology, 9 (2018), 419-460) which has been cited 112 times over 8 years.

Second, the Chen–Yang Volume Conjecture has been included in K3: A New Problem List in Low-Dimensional Topology, commonly known as Kirby’s List. Kirby’s problem lists are important landmarks in low-dimensional topology and are updated only once every two to three decades. The previous editions, K1 and K2, appeared in 1978 and 1997, respectively. Inclusion in K3 is therefore a notable recognition of the significance of the conjecture and its potential impact on the field.

Third, Dr. Chen has been listed among the mathematicians recognized in ** History and Contributors of Modern Geometric Analysis **, a booklet prepared for the international conference “Fifty Years of Geometric Analysis.” The booklet, whose editor-in-chief is the distinguished mathematician Professor Shing-Tung Yau, recognizes approximately 160 mathematicians in the section “The Field is Supported by Many Important Mathematicians.” Dr. Chen is included in this group, among which are only a few Chinese mathematicians under the age of 45.

These recognitions are a testament to the quality, originality, and growing international impact of Dr. Chen’s research.
