Dr Daniel Hampson
International Business School Suzhou

Head of Department of Intelligent Operations and Marketing

Daniel’s fascination with business began at 16, working weekend shifts at Tesco in Blackburn, England, where he gained early insights into consumer behaviour, service design, leadership, and supply chain operations. This experience inspired him to pursue a BSc in Management Studies at the University of Nottingham, followed by an MSc in Marketing and a PhD in Consumer Psychology at the University of Manchester.

He began his academic career at Manchester as a Lecturer in Marketing (2011–2018) before moving to China—first as Assistant Professor at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing (2018–2021) and then to the International Business School Suzhou (IBSS), where he has been since 2021.

Daniel’s teaching and research are informed by extensive industry experience. Before academia, he worked as a Graduate Business Analyst for Bombardier Transportation on projects including London Underground and the Virgin Voyager fleet. His PhD research was conducted with the Retail Research Forum, collaborating with leading retailers (e.g., Tesco), FMCG firms (e.g., PepsiCo), and consultancies (e.g., Deloitte). More recently, he has contributed to executive education (e.g., CRRC) and bespoke consultancy projects (e.g., Hahne).

His research, conducted primarily in China, the USA, the UK, and Brazil, explores the intersection of macroeconomics, consumer psychology, and marketing strategy, including national identity, domestic country bias, conspicuous luxury consumption, and the sharing economy. His work has appeared in journals such as Sociology, Journal of Business Ethics, Psychology & Marketing, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, International Marketing Review, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, and Journal of Business Research.
