Title: Multifunctional Robotic Material Design by 2D-materials and Artificial Intelligence for Soft Machines

活动简介

2D materials (e.g., graphene, MXene) demonstrate superior electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties,
which are highly desired for soft machines, enabling them to work in different environments and achieve optimal human-machine interfaces. Nevertheless, the incompatibility between “hard” 2D materials and “soft” matter has been a huge challenge towards full utilization of their intrinsic physicochemical properties in fabricated soft robots. This seminar introduces the progress of the integration of functional 2D materials into soft matter for fabricating soft robotic materials with required multifunctionality and reconfigurability. Reliable strategies were developed through three aspects: (1) a post-stabilization approach is developed to produce reconfigurable and multifunctional robotic backbones for the fabrication of origami robots with built-in multifunctionality; (2) integrating textured 2D materials onto soft robotic bodies, where the upper layer 2D materials can undergo programmed folding/unfolding processes to mimic skin’s stretchability; (3) utilizing emerging ML tools to realize automatic robotic material design for various soft machines.

主讲人

Dr. Yang Haitao is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering (ECE) at National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his B.S. and M.S. degree in Material Science and Engineering from Zhengzhou University (China) and a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from NUS. After his Ph.D., he joined ECE department at NUS as research fellow. As the first author, Haitao has published more than ten research papers in high-impact leading journals including Science Robotics(1), Nature Machine Intelligence (1), and ACS Nano (2). He received AIChE SLS Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2021. He also serves as the guest editor of Frontiers in Robotics and AI. His research focuses on the intersections of nanomaterials, machine intelligence, and soft electronics/robotics. He seeks to create the synergy between nanomaterials self-assembly, machine intelligence, and automated robots to (1) fabricate stretchable 2D-material electronics and multifunctional robotics backbones, and (2) construct high-accuracy machine learning models enabling automatic design of functional soft robotic materials.
