Terms and Conditions

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University has never authorised or entrusted any institution, organisation, or individual to conduct admissions activities in any form. We remind all students and parents to obtain the information regarding admissions policies, application procedures, and other related matters exclusively through official channels (e.g., the university’s website), and to remain vigilant against fraudulent activities involving false information.

I. Programme Introduction

With the purposes to give full play to the educational advantages and characteristics of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (hereafter referred to as XJTLU) and University of Liverpool (hereafter referred to as UoL), both parties agree to work together in good faith to carry out a collaborative International Programme. This programme introduces the curriculum, teaching plans, and pedagogical model of the UoL. Leveraging XJTLU’s academic strengths, it provides students with high-quality international education and a globalised learning experience.

The programme consists of two study phases.

Phase One: Students complete two academic years at XJTLU (SIP):

  • First Year: focusing on foundation courses including EAP, general education, physical education, and non-core discipline basics.
  • Second Year: taking accredited UoL Year 1 courses.

Phase Two: After successfully completing Phase One, students must transfer to UoL to complete their UoL degree programme subject to being granted an entry visa to the UK. On successful completion of their programme students will receive a UoL degree.

II. Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be lawful citizens of the People’s Republic of China, who abide by laws and regulations, are in good physical and mental health, and demonstrate excellent academic performance.  Applicants should fully embrace the international educational philosophy of both XJTLU and UoL and must possess valid qualifications from either China’s National Higher Education Entrance Examination (Gaokao) or internationally recognised standardised tests.

Gaokao Students

Priority is given to applicants who meet or exceed the Special Type Admission Cutoff Score or First-Tier Undergraduate Cutoff Score in their respective province or region.

  • Students must submit certified documentation of their Gaokao scores.

 

Non-Gaokao Students

Non-gaokao students opting for international education qualifications will be assessed on their high school transcripts and internationally recognised exam results (e.g. AP, IB, A-level, etc.) along with their English qualifications.

1)Academic requirements:

  • A-level: A-level UCAS tariff point equivalence of around 96-104 (CCC-BCC) with a grade B in relevant subjects.
  • IB Diploma: 30 points. Relevant subjects are required for specific programmes.
  • American High School qualifications- High school diploma with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 or above, plus 3 College Board AP exams with minimum grade 3 (with 4 in relevant subject).
  • Canadian High School qualifications:A Canadian High school diploma with an average of 65%, and good grades (70%) in relevant subject areas. For example:
    – Ontario: OSSD with an average of 65%, including six grade 12 subjects (denoted by U, U/C, M on transcript).
    – British Colombia: Senior Secondary Graduation Diploma average of 65% with 70% in relevant subjects.
    – Alberta: Alberta General high school diploma with 65% and 70% in relevant subjects.
    Alongside evidence of full or partial completion of the qualification in Canada, including: Canadian student visa documentation, Canadian immigration entrance stamp in passport.
  • Students who have completed 1 year of overseas university education can be considered for advanced entry (Stage 2) on a case-by-case basis.

2)English Qualifications

English qualifications are not required for students who completed high school studies in English-speaking countries, but other students should demonstrate competence through qualifications such as:

  • IELTS: 5.5 (min 5.0 in all sections)
  • TOEFL (iBT): If you took a TOEFL test on or before 20 January 2026, you’ll need 72 overall, with minimum scores of 15 in all sections. If you took a TOEFL test from 21 January 2026 onwards, when a new scoring system was introduced, you’ll need 4.0 overall, with 3.5 or above in all components. TOEFL Home Edition not accepted.
  • PTE: 58 (min 54 in all skills)

 

III. Programme Choice

For programme information, please refer to the programme list in the attached document, or visit UoL’s official website: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/courses/xjtlu for details. To ensure consistent academic standards and teaching quality, students selecting a relevant programme must complete all prerequisite courses required for the chosen programme.

During this phase, students may also apply to switch to another programme, provided they meet the corresponding transfer requirements. After entry, students may refer to the Programme Selection and Transfer Policy for details. Some programmes may have specific academic performance requirements for one or multiple courses in the first semester of Year One.

 

V. Degree Award

Students studying for UoL degrees under this arrangement who successfully complete the foundation year and the next year of their programme but who, for whatever reason, are unable or choose not to continue with their studies will be entitled to a Certificate in Higher Education Exit Award of UoL.  Students studying for UoL awards only who successfully complete the foundation year and the next two years of their programme but who, for whatever reason, are unable (or choose not) to continue with their studies will be entitled to a Diploma in Higher Education Exit Award of UoL. Students who successfully complete the foundation year and the next three years of their programme of study will receive a classified degree certificate of UoL and transcript of studies/diploma supplement.

 

V. Fees

Phase 2
(UoL)
On transfer to UoL to complete their degree programmes, students will be liable to pay the appropriate overseas student tuition fee less the prevailing discount for XJTLU students (currently 10%). Details of current fee levels can be accessed at https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/courses/xjtlu
Accommodation Fees (XJTLU) The accommodation fee is collected by the university and transferred in full to the dormitory owner’s account—the university does not retain any portion of these fees.
·  Year 1 & 2 (XJTLU – Suzhou Industrial Park):
RMB 2,200 per academic year (standard quadruple room)
Service Charge RMB 2,000 per academic year (Covers textbooks and other materials, with final adjustments for overpayment or underpayment.)

 

VI. Additional Provisions

  1. The UoL acknowledges and endorses the student management regulations and policies established by XJTLU, confirming that they align with the academic and non-academic standards upheld by the UoL. Consequently, during their study at XJTLU, students are obliged to comply with all institutional policies and procedures, including but not limited to those governing learning and teaching, examinations and assessments, academic progression, disciplinary actions, appeal mechanisms and non-academic affairs.
  2. Students studying for UoL degrees under this arrangement will not be eligible for any scholarships available for undergraduate study at XJTLU. However, students who are in the top 5% of their programme cohort (based on XJTLU’s ranking) and who achieve a minimum average score of 80%+ for STEM subjects, or 70%+ for non-STEM subjects will receive a Vice-Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship of a 30% reduction in tuition fees (subject to the policies of the University of Liverpool). All students that join Liverpool in Year 2 receive an automatic 10% partnership discount. Besides, students will be entitled to scholarships provided by UoL for postgraduate study at Liverpool subject to terms and conditions for such scholarships, should they progress to postgraduate study at Liverpool on completion of their undergraduate degree.
  3. Both UoL and XJTLU welcome students with special education needs and will try to accommodate students’ needs wherever possible. Disabilities, special needs (including dyslexia or other specific learning difficulty) or medical conditions, must be declared at the point of application. As all the students enrolled through this programme must go to Liverpool to complete Y3 and Y4 studies, students whose conditions do not allow them to study and live abroad are precluded from admission onto the programme.

 

VI. Application Procedure & Timeline

Students must submit their applications through the online application system for this programme. For detailed application procedure and onsite consultation service, please refer to the attached Application Guide and instruction for submitting transcripts and supporting document.

Phase One

  1. Application Deadline: July 13th. For applications submitted by this deadline, applicants will receive notification of whether further assessment is required by July 16th at the latest.
  2. Assessment Notification: For applicants required to undergo further assessment, the team will send the specific assessment procedures and schedule via email and text message. Assessments for Phase One applicants are tentatively scheduled for July 16th –17th 2026.
  3. Admission Results: Following review and confirmation by the University of Liverpool, the team will notify applicants of the final admission results and provide admitted students with electronic materials related to registration, course selection, fee payment, etc., to facilitate early preparation for enrolment. For students who confirm their intention to accept offers, the team will subsequently mail the hard copies of relevant materials.
  4. Official Offer Letter: The University of Liverpool will issue an official e-copy of Offer Letter to admitted students.

Phase Two

  1. Application Deadline: To facilitate assessment scheduling, the deadline for submission of Phase Two application materials for applicants using Gaokao scores is (in principle) August 13th. Subsequent arrangements for this phase (including assessment times) will be announced separately. Other applicants (including Gaokao applicants not requiring further assessment) may submit their applications by August 31st 2026.
    (Whether an applicant requires further assessment will be determined based on the application results of Phase One.)
