Abstract

In this exchange, we are honoured to invite the director of "Like Winds, Like Weeds," Fan Zhang, to screen the film "Like Winds, Like Weeds" in our campus cinema. After the screening, Director Fan Zhang will first introduce the film's creative process, scriptwriting, theme presentation, and the various challenges encountered during production. Following this, there will be an open Q&A session between the audience and the director. The director will further address questions from the audience regarding the film's details and share creative insights.

Plot Introduction:Xiao Mei (played by Keyu Guo), who has been separated from her husband for many years, escapes her past and leaves her hometown of Cangshan. She works as a domestic worker in Shanghai while taking care of her mother with Alzheimer's disease and her rebellious, early-romancing son. After experiencing the various hardships of life in a foreign land, she decides to return to her hometown of Cangshan, only to find that its name has changed. A mother who runs away from the present, an old person who forgets the past, and a child who questions the future. This is a story of the survival of three generations in a foreign land and a difficult journey in search of spiritual freedom.

Speaker

Fan Zhang graduated from the Department of Stage Design at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. He has received nominations for the "30th Golden Rooster Award for Best Art Direction" and the "Greek International Film Festival Best Art Direction." In 2019, he wrote the film script "Holiday," which was selected for the "Shanghai International Film Festival Project Market" and the "Golden Rooster Film Festival Project Market." In 2021, he wrote the film script "Like Winds, Like Weeds," which was selected for the "Pingyao International Film Festival Project Market." In 2022, he directed the short film "Like Winds, Like Weeds," which was selected for the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. In 2023, he directed his feature film debut "Like Winds, Like Weeds," which was selected for the "17th FIRST Main Competition Unit" and the "5th Hainan Island International Film Festival Main Competition Unit."
