The School of Languages Symposium: Exploring Innovation in Language Teaching

On September 3rd, 2024, the School of Languages at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) hosted its first symposium of the academic year. More than 30 faculty members presented 15 insightful sessions, covering innovative approaches and the latest research in language teaching and learning.

Exploring Cutting-Edge Language Education Practices

Throughout the day, participants engaged in a variety of workshops and presentations, designed to enhance both teaching practices and student engagement. Notable sessions included "Constructing EAP Through LEGO®: Playful Serious Learning," led by Mairi Law, and "An Approach to Facilitate Language Learning and Teaching With AI," presented by Shuangxin Zhang and Hongjuan Yu.

AI and Language Education: Shaping the Future

One of the highlights of the symposium was a focus on the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and language education. Sessions like "Investigating XJTLU Students' AI Literacy Levels" and "AI-Powered Rubric Design in EAP" illustrated the potential for AI to enhance learning and assessment processes.

Promoting Equality and Collaboration in the Classroom

In addition to technology, the symposium also addressed critical pedagogical themes. For example, Yishi Lin's presentation, "How Promoting Equality Influences Student Engagement in Group Discussions," explored how inclusive practices can enrich classroom dynamics, while Ana Li Zhong and Shuhan Li discussed the role of global narratives in fostering learning through "Story Circles."
