Recently, the Department of Foundational Mathematics at the School of Mathematics and Physics organised a special learning exchange for first-year students taking Calculus (MTH029).

Using the metaphor of "acceleration," she vividly illustrated that in the university stage, the speed of learning progress is more important than the starting point. "Mathematics learning is not just about pursuing scores; more importantly, it is about exercising ways of thinking through mathematics. " said Dr Rui Zhang.

During the exchange meeting, teachers from the Department of Fundamental Mathematics, including Dr Zhou Wubin, Dr Wang Yi, and Dr Zhang Kun, shared their teaching philosophies. They emphasized that critical thinking and problem-solving skills can be better developed through the study of mathematics. Teachers encouraged students to read textbooks in depth, actively participate in classroom discussions, and take advantage of Office hours for one-on-one exchanges with teachers.

In addition, the teachers discussed course designs and how to find a balance between academic and career planning. They advised students to consider not only current grades but also long-term learning goals and career development when choosing courses.

At the end of the exchange meeting, the teachers commended students who performed excellently in MTH004 and MTH008 in the previous semester and invited students to share their insights, encouraging all students to continue to work hard and pursue academic excellence in the new semester.

The event received a positive response from the students, who said that through direct dialogue with teachers, they had a clearer understanding of their learning goals and a better understanding of the teachers' expectations.

"The reason for choosing to conduct the dialogue activity after the in-semester exam is that we hope to gather everyone's valuable suggestions and opinions through today's event so that we can make targeted improvements and adjustments in the subsequent teaching process, thereby continuously enhancing the quality and effectiveness of teaching." added Dr Zhang Rui.
