On November 15th, teachers and students from the BA Translation and Interpreting programme, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, visited Shanghai Yizhe Information Technology Co., Ltd. The visit aimed to to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the cutting-edge developments in the translation technology industry, offer insights into the company culture, broaden their horizons, and enhance their knowledge of industry trends and work placement.

Mr. Jian Chen, the Chief Technology Officer of Shanghai Yizhe Information Technology Co., Ltd., delivered a warm welcome speech, expressing his sincere welcome to BA TRI teacher, students, and student development advisor. He emphasized the importance of school-enterprise cooperation, expressinghis hope that this exchange would foster a deeper mutual understanding, explore collaboration opportunities, and contribute to the growth and development of translation talents.

Dr. Zhiwei Han, Programme Director of BA Translation and Interpreting, provided an overview of the academic staff, curriculum structure and features, as well as student achievement ofthe programme. She highlighted that the programme attaches great importance on developing student’s bilingual mindset, intercultural communication skills and employability. Dr. Han also expressed her enthusiasm for further strengthening the collaboration between BA Translation and Interpreting and translation industry partners through this visit.

Ms. Yanli Liu, the Technology Marketing Manager of Shanghai Yizhe Information Technology Co., Ltd., delivered a detailed presentation on the company’s strengths and specialties in the industry of translation technology, as well as itsdevelopment perspectives. She highlighted the company’s is commitment to innovative translation technology products, enhancing strengh in Research & Development, and achieving win-win cooperation with various industry parteners and higher education institutions.

MsJingyi Yang, the Technology Operations Director of Shanghai Yizhe Information Technology Co., Ltd., delivered an insightful speech titled " Introduction to the Translation Profession and Skill Development." She encouraged students to actively engagein practical activities to horn their translation skills and prepare for their future careers. She specifically pointed out that translation students can explore various career paths, such as game localization, technical writing, operations management, digital integrated media publishing, journalism, public relations, and more.

In addition, in light of the fierce competition on the job market, Ms. Yang recommended that students consider taking CATTI to enhance their language proficiency. With the adventof GPT and AI technology, she also encouraged students to leverage innovative translation tools and AI-empowered human-machine collaborative platforms to stay abreast of industry trends and meet the evolving demands of the job market.

Furthermore, Ms. Yang shared insights on how to leverage various channels to find internship opportunities. She pointed out that by participating in relevant internship programs, translation students will have opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills into practice, develop problem-solving skills and therefore enhance their core competencies in the workplace, such as communication and teamwork, which are highly valued by employers.
The students who participated in the visit expressed that this extracurricular event provided them with valuable insight into the real-worldwork environment of the translation industry. It broaded their understanding of the industry, and help them refine their career plans.
