Exploring and immersing in culture: The Westminster University study tour to XJTLU

From 22 to 28 February, 19 students and staff members from Westminster University’s International (Digital) Marketing programme embarked on a week-long study tour at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s (XJTLU) Academy of Film and Creative Technology (AFCT). During this memorable journey, they not only delved into XJTLU’s innovative teaching models but also visited partner enterprises such as Zhouzhuang Digital Dream Factory, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the unique charm of Chinese culture.

Arrival at XJTLU: A Journey of Exploration and Warm Welcome

On the afternoon of 22 February, the Westminster University students and staff were welcomed to the XJTLU campus with a guided tour led by the university’s Arts Centre and staff from the Academy of Film and Creative Technology. The university’s architecture, blending Chinese and Western styles, left a lasting impression on the visitors. The tour provided an overview of XJTLU’s development, educational philosophy, and commitment to international education.

The day also included a visit to the XJTLU Museum, where the delegation delved into the university’s rich cultural heritage and future vision. The museum’s exhibits showcased XJTLU’s journey in integrating global perspectives with local innovation.

The evening concluded with a welcome dinner at the IA Building on XJTLU’s South Campus, attended by a number of staff members from the AFCT. The dinner marked the beginning of a week filled with cultural exchange and academic exploration.

Suzhou and Shanghai Excursions: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

On 23 February, the Westminster University students and staff explored Suzhou’s rich cultural heritage with the help of XJTLU student volunteers. Their day began at the Suzhou Museum (West Hall), where they marvelled at the fusion of traditional and modern architecture.

The afternoon was spent wandering through the historic Pingjiang Road area, where the students and staff experienced the charm of ancient alleyways and enjoyed traditional Suzhou snacks. This immersive experience deepened their appreciation of traditional Chinese culture.

On 25 February, the group ventured to Shanghai for a day of exploration in China’s “metropolis.” They visited the Shanghai Museum, immersing themselves in China’s cultural history through its extensive collections. The evening was capped off with a visit to The Bund, where they admired the iconic skyline of Lujiazui, symbolizing Shanghai’s modernity and international flair.

In just two days, the Westminster University students and staff experienced the full spectrum of Chinese culture, from the ancient water towns of Jiangnan to the bustling metropolis of Shanghai.

Classroom Experience: A Glimpse into XJTLU’s Innovative Education

During their visit, the Westminster University students immersed themselves in XJTLU’s classrooms, experiencing the university’s unique teaching environment and innovative educational approach. They participated in a variety of courses, including Visual Effects, Film History, and Sonic Art, offered by the Academy of Film and Creative Technology.

These courses showcased XJTLU’s commitment to interdisciplinary learning and practical application. The Westminster students engaged with XJTLU students and staff, gaining insights into the university’s approach to integrating global perspectives with local contexts. The experience not only broadened their academic horizons but also fostered meaningful connections with their peers.

Enterprise Visit: Discovering the Intersection of Culture and Technology

On 27 February, the Westminster University students and staff visited Zhouzhuang Digital Dream Factory, a leading digital film production base in East China. The visit highlighted the factory’s state-of-the-art technology and its integration of traditional Chinese cultural elements. The delegation was impressed by the innovative approaches to film production and cultural heritage preservation.

After the visit, the group explored the ancient water town of Zhouzhuang, experiencing the unique charm of this historic destination.

The combination of modern enterprise and traditional culture provided a vivid illustration of China’s dynamic cultural landscape.

Farewell Dinner: Celebrating Friendship and Future Collaboration

On the evening of 28 February, a warm and memorable farewell dinner was held to conclude the study tour. Staff members from XJTLU’s Academy of Film and Creative Technology and student volunteers joined Westminster University to celebrate their week together.

The dinner was a time for reflection and sharing, with both sides reflecting on the rich experiences of the past week. The Westminster students expressed their appreciation for the warm hospitality and the unique insights gained into Chinese culture and education. XJTLU students and staff shared their enthusiasm for future collaborations and the lasting friendships formed during the visit.

This study tour was more than just an academic exchange; it was a profound cultural dialogue that bridged two universities. Through classroom visits, cultural excursions, and enterprise tours, the participants gained a holistic understanding of Chinese education and culture. The week-long journey broadened their international horizons and laid the foundation for future cooperation between the two universities.
