21 Apr 2025

On April 10, the Department of International Studies and the Research Group on Global Challenges in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences held the “Dancing with Dragons and Eagles: Global South and Great Power Dynamics”, bringing together scholars from XJTLU and other institutions— University of Toronto, University of Peloponnese, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Shenzhen, Wageningen University, University of Nairobi— to critically explore Sino-US competition from the vantage point of the Global South. This workshop was organized by Dr. Debora Malito, Dr. Dragan Pavlicevic, and Professor You Ji, with support from the Department of International Studies.

Tense relations between China and the United States are creating new opportunities to rethink global power dynamics and the world order. However, discussions about competitive Sino-US relations often focus on the strategies of these great powers, neglecting how global power dynamics and competition play out in specific contexts.

In this workshop, we challenged the assumption that the Global South is merely a battleground where major powers fight and exert their influence. To understand contemporary global power dynamics, the contributors highlighted the importance of considering how power rivalries are expressed in various regions and from the viewpoints of different actors.
