Trailblazing New Academic Frontiers

The School of Science is trailblazing new academic frontiers and provides exciting learning opportunities to its students with the launch of its new BSc in Biomedical Sciences degree, School of Science at XJTLU. Professor John Moraros, Dean of the School of Science said “This new and innovative programme represents proof of our strong commitment to provide our students with the best educational choices and experiences at XJTLU. It is truly an interdisciplinary degree that uniquely combines biology and medicine to help our high achieving students understand and master their knowledge on how the human body works in both health and pathological conditions. It is exciting development that ushers a new era for our School and XJTLU.”

Top Students, Bright Future

On the afternoon of May 9th, 2025, the BSc in Biomedical Sciences Programme, held its first informational session. This new BSc degree is receiving significant attention in the social media and major interest from students since it recently received approval by the Ministry of Education in China and the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. This was evident with the high attendance at the event by about 40 student participants from diverse backgrounds and with a strong interest and sincere passion to become part of the competitive entry of only 30 top talented students of the first inaugural intake in September 2025.

Dr. Yongtao Zhu, Programme Director

Dr. Yongtao Zhu, the Programme Director introduced the key elements and many attractive features of the BSc in Biomedical Sciences Programme and helped highlight the new innovations in curriculum, strong emphasis on research focused learning and state-of-the-art lab facilities, as well as the resources and supports offered to graduates in their pursuit of highly rewarding future career paths upon completing their BSc in Biomedical Sciences studies. The informational session sparked many interesting questions and bidirectional communications between faculty members and potential incoming students, who wished to obtain deeper knowledge and better understanding on how to gain successful entry into this new newly launched, exciting and highly competitive programme as well as the opportunities offered by the School of Science.

Current research areas in the Department of Biosciences and Bioinformatics.

Dr. Zhu said “Biomedical Sciences is a comprehensive interdisciplinary field and combines areas in Biological Sciences, Basic Medicine, Bioinformatics, and Pharmacy. This programme equips our students with a solid theoretical foundation in biological sciences but also emphasizes basic medical theories, concepts and principles such as human body functions, disease mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment. In addition, the programme holistically cultivates biomedical related research skills such as scientific experimental techniques, clinical data analysis and incorporating AI tools relevant to biomedical sciences. By translating scientific discoveries into clinical diagnostics, therapies, and preventive strategies, Biomedical Sciences serves as a critical bridge connecting the exciting worlds of basic scientific research to clinical medicine.”

Dr. Zhu then introduced the programme curriculum and emphasized some of the new and fascinating modules specifically designed for this programme including Human Anatomy and Physiology, Developmental Biology, Nutrition and Metabolism, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and AI in Biomedicine. Modules in this programme are designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and experience to pursue higher education in medical or graduate schools abroad.

Dr. Lee Wei Lim, Module Leader Anatomy and Physiology

Dr. Lee Wei Lim, who designed one of the most important and featured modules in Human Anatomy and Physiology, spoke to the students next. Dr. Lim enthusiastically introduced the lecture and practical topics of this key module to the excited audience. The module is designed to provide fundamental knowledge and deep understanding of the structures and functions of major organs in the human body. The students will obtain the theoretically knowledge about Human Anatomy and Physiology and additionally, they will have first hand, practical classes in which they will use state-of-the-art medical devices and various diagnostic methods such as digital dissections of the human body, electroencephalogram (brain), electrocardiogram (heart), spirometry (lungs), and clinical examinations of the human organs through the use of auscultation and percussion diagnostic methods.  Thus, this module prepares students with the basic knowledge, skills and expertise to pursue advanced studies and future healthcare and biomedical research related careers.

Exceptional Career Opportunities

Finally, Dr. Zhu introduced a variety of rewarding career pathways that are available to graduates of this innovative BSc in Biomedical Sciences programme with exciting job opportunities in academic and medical settings, clinical and research institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, and healthcare and public health sectors. Dr. Zhu also mentioned that Masters and PhD programmes related to Biomedical Sciences are available in many world leading universities around the world such as Harvard University, Yale University, Stanford University, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of Hong Kong, and University of Melbourne among others. The BSc in Biomedical Sciences student graduates will be well prepared to pursue competitive opportunities for postgraduate education in these world renowned universities.

At the end of the event, the students asked several good questions regarding the curriculum design, 2+2 articulations, career pathways, and eligibility to get into this highly competitive top programme. Dr. Zhu and Dr. Lim had a great time communicating with the interested students and answering these questions. The students showed a strong interest in the research and teaching facilities in the Department and Dr. Zhu was happy to give them a tour in the research and teaching labs to conclude this wonderful event.
