Deep Integration of Academia and Industry: Co-creating a New Blueprint for IoT Development

The 2nd Eco-Partner Conference was successfully held at XJTLU's Taicang campus on June 6. In light of this, the School of Internet of Things (IoT) hosted the 2025 IoT Industry Alliance Forum in the morning. The forum brought together 39 representatives from 27 enterprises to discuss the latest challenges, emerging trends, and collaboration opportunities in IoT, serving as a vital platform for deeper academic-industrial integration.

Before the forum, the School held a special Advisory Board Meeting, inviting key industry partners to engage in in-depth discussions on topics such as IoT curriculum, research collaboration, and talent development.

Opening Remarks

Dr Matilda Isaac, Dean of the School of Internet of Things, welcomed participants—including faculty, staff, fellow deans, students, and industry partners. She highlighted the school’s seven key research initiatives, spanning smart healthcare, autonomous driving, and smart manufacturing, which strengthen academic-industry collaboration.

The Dean also discussed opportunities presented by China’s Low-Altitude Economy initiative in advancing IoT innovation and announced new undergraduate scholarships to cultivate future innovators. Emphasizing the critical role of academia-industry-research synergy in driving breakthroughs, she invited partners to collaborate with the School of IoT.

The forum continued with panel discussions which their members were introduced by Ms Wanyong Ge, the School Manager of School of IoT.

Panel Discussion 1
Current Challenges and Future Trends in IoT Industry

The first panel discussion, moderated by Dr Yue Liu, Director of Research and Industry Initiatives at the School of Internet of Things, focused on "Current Challenges and Future Trends in IoT Industry". Experts from companies such as Leworks Smart Manufacturing, Henkel China, and Shanghai Taopin Electronic Technology joined faculty members to share insights on topics including technological innovation, market applications, and talent development. The lively discussion was further enriched by active audience participation through question cards.

Panel Discussion 2
Collaboration Opportunities between Academia and Industry

The second panel discussion, moderated by Dean Matilda Isaac, explored "Collaboration Opportunities between Academia and Industry." Panelists from Sunway University (Malaysia), Matebot AI, THINTUIT, and Shanghai Shiwei Remote Sensing Information Technology discussed ways to deepen university-industry partnerships and accelerate the commercialization of research outcomes.

Dr Anwar P.P. Abdul Majeed, the Head of Department of Data Science and Aritificial Intelligence from Sunway University emphasized that academia-industry cooperation should go beyond superficial engagement and penetrate to the core of research projects. He stressed, "Both parties should jointly define research directions, share resources, and maintain close communication throughout project implementation."

Recognition of IoT Industry Alliance Membership

A special "IoT Industry Alliance Membership Recognition" was held during the forum. Dr Karim Moussa, Director of Learning and Teaching, and Dr Matilda Isaac, Dean of the School of IoT, presented honorary plaques to alliance members, recognizing their contributions to university-industry collaboration.

Dr Yue Liu delivered the closing remarks for the forum, summarizing the forum’s key takeaways and offering a forward-looking vision for IoT development: integration, sustainability, and collaboration. He emphasized that the convergence of Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) and edge computing is revolutionizing real-time decision-making, while technologies like digital twins are reshaping industry value.

The IoT Industry Alliance forum was not only a platform for intellectual exchange but also a milestone in advancing university-industry collaboration.

The event ended with a formal launch of IoT Industry Alliance in the afternoon. Moving forward, the School of Internet of Things at XJTLU will continue to work hand-in-hand with industry partners to drive IoT innovation and application, injecting new momentum into the digital economy.

Special Acknowlodgement
