'We resolve our own sorrows': screening comfort women in Chinese documentary films
Zhang, P. & Fang, C., Dec 2024, In: Humanities and Social Sciences Communications. 11, 1, 139.
This article adds a critical lens to the vicissitudinous public remembrance of the comfort women in the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the oscillating representations of comfort women in Chinese documentary films. First, it probes how the violated bodies of comfort women on the screen constantly challenge and disrupt the entrenched gender norms in the interstices of the PRC’s official paradigms of 'national humiliation' and 'national greatness.' Then, it examines the distinctive film aesthetics and documentary ethics of Chinese director Guo Ke’s documentary films Thirty Two (2014) and Twenty Two (2017), given that the latter harvested record-breaking box office sales and incited heated online discussions of the comfort women issue in China. In particular, this article scrutinises how Guo’s esthetically appealing, politically non-confrontational, and ethically provocative approach helps constitute survivors’ private, gendered memories and encourages the viewers to contemplate his minimalist narratives. In a broader sense, this article contributes to the discussions of gender, nationalism, war remembrance, and documentary filmmaking in contemporary China.View more:

'Thangka Aesthetics': Decoding the Visual Representation of Sonthar Gyal’s The Sun Beaten Path (2011) and The River (2015)
Li, Y., 2024, In: Quarterly Review of Film and Video.
This paper aims to engage critically with the aesthetic exploration of Sonthar Gyal’s Tibetan films, which comprise The Sun Beaten Path (2011) and The River (2015). The paper reinforces the importance of the elaboration of ‘Thangka aesthetics’ in the films. In other words, these two films embody the auteurist characteristic that expresses the director’s core of repeated cinematic/artistic praxis – ‘Thangka aesthetics’. Further to this, these two films adapt the aesthetics of the Tibetan Thangka painting style to tell their stories, in order to grasp the deeper socio-cultural and ideological meanings/significances in the text and beyond.View more:

The New Other in Artificial Intelligence
O’Dowd, A., Carvalhais, M. (2024). The New Other of Artificial Intelligence. In:Gonçalves Lind, A., Pinto, A.P., Lambert, D. (eds) The Process of Becoming Other in the Classical and Contemporary World. Palgrave Studies in Otherness and Communication. Palgrave Macmillan, Cham.
Humans evolved to seek patterns to build self-perception. But in the last century, our interactions with nature have decreased while human-machine interactions have increased, making humans more machine-like. Traditional design approaches have led to a sterile cohabitation. Rapid media consumption, limited attention spans, and everyday AI like ChatGPT are pushing society towards non-human interactions. Early humans recognized the other before themselves by depicting animals, but now, intelligent machines are simplifying these patterns. To reconnect with our humanity, machines need to adopt performance art principles and interact naturally.View more:

把游戏作为方法
Sun, J., 13 Feb 2025, In:社会科学报. 1939, 6
This article discusses the importance of game literacy, emphasising a deeper understanding of games beyond two common perspectives: addiction-focused criticism and mere entertainment value. Drawing on James Paul Gee's concept of games as interactive languages, the article highlights the need for players to engage critically with games, both by analysing and creating content. It explores the dimensions of game universes, including "noun" (static elements like graphics and narrative) and "verb" (interactive gameplay mechanics), and introduces the concept of procedural rhetoric to analyse how games convey ideologies. Finally, it advocates for critical gaming to foster reflection on societal issues.View more:

Culture, commerce and crowdfunding: Artists’ experiences of crowdfunding and lessons from Japan
Terui, T., Mar 2025, In: Media, Culture and Society. 47, 2, p. 287-301 15 p.
Recently, cultural crowdfunding has emerged as a prominent funding mechanism, enabling the efficient collection of microdonations from supporters. Despite its growing significance, research on cultural crowdfunding remains limited. This paper seeks to make an original contribution by examining the impacts of cultural crowdfunding in Japan, focusing on the perspectives of performing artists and representatives of cultural organisations. It underscores the importance of considering local contexts and developing a nuanced understanding of crowdfunding’s role in the cultural and creative industries. To explore artists’ attitudes and approaches towards cultural crowdfunding, this study employs Boltanski and Thévenot’s theories of justification, specifically contrasting the values of the inspired world and the market world. By analysing cultural crowdfunding in Japan, this paper aims to enhance the understanding of artists’ policies and the role of public support for culture in the post-pandemic society.

Estados para a Tensão: Compêndio de Resistências para o Aqui e o Agora
Petrauskas, I., 1 Apr 2025, Annablume. 264 p.
At its core, Resistance is an appeal to desire. To resist is to create a tension between competing desires, and the strength of that Resistance is determined by the intensity of the tension it generates. Yet, when desires become elusive and difficult to identify, this vital dialectical process is stifled, leading to a gradual erosion of the potential and significance of Resistance. This book delves into how, through art, we can still provoke tensions within society's structures. Titled “States for Tension: A Compendium of Resistances on the Here and Now,” it is structured into five distinct booklets, each illuminating a unique state of tension: Fiction, Listening, Self-Consumption, Deviation, and Idleness. While each booklet can be read independently, the interplay between these tensions invites deeper exploration. Readers are encouraged to navigate their own journey through this work, reflecting on the question: To resist—what purpose does it serve?View more:

The Self as Other: Embodied Contradictions in Caring for an Unfamiliar Body
Petrauskas, I., Feb 2025, International Conference on Gender Studies.
Resistance is fundamentally grounded in cultural/artistic practices. Resisting is pitting desire against desire to create tension. When desires are unclear, this tension fades, undermining Resistance. This book explores how to resist amid life's complexities, using five booklets to examine possible sites of tension. It asks: what does resistance mean today and what possible meanings might it still serve?
Urban Livability in Shanghai's Post-demolition Era: An Analytical Review
Zhuang, Q., 14 Mar 2025, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya | AMPS: Urban Futures - Cultural Pasts Sustainable Cities, Cultures & Crafts. Amps, p. 211-220 10 p. (AMPS PROCEEDINGS SERIES 40.2; vol. 2).
Shanghai has undergone a significant transformation in its urban landscape, transitioning from densely populated Penghu settlements (棚户区) to a reimagined metropolitan identity in the post-demolition era. This research seeks to critically analyse the lived experiences of those displaced by this sweeping urban renewal. Although the demolitions aimed to improve living conditions, they often resulted in significant upheaval, forcing long-time residents into unfamiliar suburban environments. This study explores the multifaceted implications of these relocations, delving into the identity transitions experienced by residents as they adapt to their new neighborhoods, the reconfiguration of social networks, and their overall satisfaction with improved living conditions juxtaposed against loss of community ties and accessibility to essential services.
The AI Imperative in Music
Vasquez, J. C., 28 Mar 2025, In: Journal SEAMUS. 33, 1-2, p. 15-16
The paper explores AI's transformative impact on music production. It argues AI tools enhance efficiency but lack human intentionality. The author challenges the idea of AI vs humans, instead suggesting AI should augment human creativity. They warn of potential issues like cultural homogenization and market saturation. Ultimately, they advocate for a hybrid approach where AI enhances human creativity with ethical considerations in AI education.View more:
