From awareness to action: XJTLU academic leads climate change workshop in Cambodia

On 29 June 2025, Dr Daniel Yonto from the Department of Urban Planning and Design at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) hosted a one-day workshop in Kampong Cham, Cambodia, aiming at enhancing students’ understanding of climate change and encouraging localised climate action.

The workshop used the Climate Fresk, an interactive, card-based learning tool that helps participants collaboratively explore the complex science of climate change in a hands-on and accessible way. Dr Yonto’s facilitation created a dynamic, engaging space where students could deepen their understanding of the causes, effects, and interconnectedness of climate-related issues.

Dr Yonto says that this workshop is part of his ongoing research to explore how interactive, student-centered learning approaches can empower young people in Southeast Asia to become proactive climate leaders.

“The primary goal was to help participants move from climate awareness to climate action by breaking down complex scientific information into digestible and practical insights.

“Throughout the afternoon, the students worked together to explore not only what climate change means for the world, but specifically what it means for Cambodia’s future generations - and what actions they can take next.

“It was inspiring to see how quickly students engaged with the science and started thinking critically about how to localise solutions for their own communities,” he says.
