On September 13, 2025, Associate Professor Jinbo He from the Department of Biosciences and Bioinformatics, School of Science, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the 2nd China Conference on Eating Disorders held at the Shanghai Mental Health Center. The conference was hosted by the National Medical Center for Mental Disorders (Shanghai Mental Health Center) and co-organized by the Chinese Society of Psychosomatic Medicine’s Eating Disorder Working Group and the Chinese Society of Psychiatry’s Eating Disorder Research Group.
The event brought together leading medical experts, psychologists, and researchers from China and abroad who are influential in the field of eating disorders, focusing on the theme “Treatment and Research of Eating Disorders under the Integrated Medicine Model.”
Background and Significance: Addressing the Urgent Challenge of Eating Disorders
In recent years, the prevalence of eating disorders in China has risen rapidly and shown a trend toward younger onset, particularly among adolescent females. Eating disorders not only severely damage patients’ physical and mental health and social functioning, but also pose life-threatening risks. Families face heavy emotional and financial burdens, while clinical professionals encounter significant challenges in treatment.
To enhance national capacity for identifying and treating eating disorders and to strengthen multidisciplinary collaboration, the conference invited top experts to provide hands-on training. With comprehensive content, innovative teaching formats, and rich case studies, the training attracted nearly 100 participants and was met with enthusiastic feedback.
Keynote Speech: Digital Interventions and Advances in Body Image Research
In his keynote, Associate Professor He presented on “Improving Body Image for Female Social Media Users with Eating Disorder Symptoms: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Two Online Self-help Single-session Interventions.”
Starting from the link between social media, body image, and eating disorders, he outlined the major current intervention models for body image. He then introduced his lab’s latest development: a single-session, online self-help intervention module delivered via WeChat Mini Program. He also presented findings from the randomized controlled trial and discussed the potential applications of this digital intervention in future clinical and public health contexts.
