On the afternoon of September 17th, classroom SB221 hosted a unique scientific writing workshop. Doctoral and master's students from various disciplines within the School of Science—including Environmental Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Biological Science, Bioinformatics and Chemistry —gathered together. Led by Dr. Zhang Yunyan and Ms. Ma Jinying from the Academic Literacies Centre (ALC), they explored the art of language in scientific writing.
“Good scientific writing must not only be accurate, but also vibrant and powerful,” Dr. Zhang Yunyan stated in her opening remarks, capturing the core mission of the workshop. Over the three-hour session, students learned the secrets to making research articles “clear and engaging”: using strong verbs, choosing active voice, adhering to the principle of end-weight. These techniques make complex scientific research accessible and compelling.
The instructors also prepared a special surprise—colorful adorable octopus plush toys and sweet candies—adding a relaxed and joyful atmosphere to the learning experience. Amid laughter and conversation, students exchanged ideas, with interdisciplinary perspectives sparking new insights.
“I used to worry that my English writing wasn’t academic enough, but that often made my writing rigid and hard to understand,” shared by a student who attended this workshop. “Today, I learned how to make language both professional and lively. It’s really practical!”
Every Wednesday afternoon, from 13:30 to 16:00, classroom SB221 hosts such scientific writing workshops. This is an excellent platform for interdisciplinary exchange, where PhD and master’s students from the College of Science collectively enhance their academic writing skills and grow together through mutual learning and inspiration.
Join us! Let’s use the power of language to make scientific achievements shine even brighter.
