Linking global agendas with campus action: XJTLU Sustainability Club holds first meeting

02 Apr 2026

On 18 March, the XJTLU Sustainability Club successfully held its first club meeting. The club is led by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and aims to promote student-led initiatives on sustainability issues.

As a student-led club at XJTLU dedicated to exploring sustainability from a humanities and social sciences perspective, the club aims to bring global sustainability debates into everyday campus life while providing an interdisciplinary platform for dialogue, collaboration, and practical engagement.

The meeting began with an opening introduction by the club’s academic supervisor, Dr. Niklas Weins from the Department of International Studies who outlined the strategic vision and a diverse range of ideas for initiatives for the semester, including field trips, guest lectures, and campus-based environmental actions.

These activities can be organized not only to raise awareness of sustainability challenges but also to encourage students to actively participate in shaping sustainable practices within their immediate community.

A key highlight of Dr. Weins’ presentation was the emphasis on Earth Day as a central milestone for the club’s activities this semester. He noted that the Sustainability Club will align its programming with the University’s Sustainability Council’s activities for this global event, using it as an opportunity to connect international sustainability agendas with local action at the SIP campus. Through this approach, students will be able to engage directly with sustainability practices, translating abstract global goals into tangible, community-based initiatives.

Following the introduction, the meeting opened a discussion where participants actively contributed ideas and perspectives on the future development of the club. Students discussed the club’s future functions, including the possibility of initiating collaborative projects with other schools and departments across the university. The conversation reflected a strong sense of enthusiasm and collective ownership, with members expressing their aspirations for the club to become a dynamic hub for interdisciplinary exchange and innovation in sustainability.

Importantly, the objectives and activities of the Sustainability Club are closely aligned with the educational goals of the International Relations program within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Through participation in club activities, students will engage with a wide range of contemporary sustainability issues, such as transnational supply chains, corporate ESG governance, and the future of food. These topics not only reflect pressing global challenges but also provide valuable opportunities for students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world contexts.

By examining how sustainability is governed across different levels—from local communities to global institutions—students can develop a more nuanced understanding of international cooperation, policy implementation, and stakeholder dynamics. The club will serve as an extension of the classroom, enabling students to strengthen their analytical skills while gaining practical insights into sustainability governance and practice.

Moreover, the interdisciplinary nature of the club encourages students from diverse academic backgrounds to contribute their perspectives, to enrich discussions and foster innovative approaches to complex problems. This collaborative environment is particularly important in the field of sustainability, where effective solutions often require the integration of insights from multiple disciplines, including politics, economics and business, sociology, anthropology and environmental studies.

The successful launch of the first club meeting demonstrates the strong interest among students in sustainability issues and the potential of student-led initiatives to drive meaningful engagement on campus.

We would like to thank all members who participated in this inaugural meeting. Your enthusiasm and contributions have laid a solid foundation for the future development of the Sustainability Club. We look forward to seeing more students join us in exploring and advancing sustainable development in the months ahead.
