Extended Study Scheme

Extended Study Scheme

ESS Overview

Knowledge and skills in Design and Engineering can benefit your personal growth and career in multiple ways, regardless of your primary area of study.

  • Problem-solving and Critical Thinking: you will learn how to evaluate information and consider multiple perspectives to solve complex and “wicked” open-ended problems, with wide-ranging applications in all professional fields.
  • Creativity and Innovation: Design and engineering encourage creative thinking and the ability to innovate. Acquiring these skills facilitates the development of new products, processes, and solutions that can positively impact society and the economy.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Design and engineering often involve multidisciplinary teamwork. Acquiring these skills helps individuals communicate effectively and collaborate with professionals from different backgrounds to achieve common goals.
  • Environmental and Social Impact: Design and engineering significantly impact society and the environment. Acquiring knowledge in these areas allows individuals to develop sustainable solutions and consider their work’s social and environmental implications.

The School’s Extended Study Scheme offers all XJTLU students an opportunity to expand their academic potential and career prospects in these areas. Students can select  modules of 5 credits worth per semester – which will be recorded in their transcripts – and obtain a named ESS Certificate upon completing 20 credits.
